Q: What kind of training/behavior issues do you deal with?
A: I deal with many and most issues. I specialize in Behavior Management which usually includes issues like impulse control, seperation anxiety, and shy dogs, among other issues. I also work on issues such as basic obedience and puppy issues. I will deal with aggression depending on type and severity. If after the initial interview I refuse services, I will refer you to a colleage who is experienced or specializes in the issue at hand.
Q: What training methods do you use?
A: I feel that Positive Reinforcement, Play-training, and Clicker-training are much faster, more effective, and longer lasting methods of training than some of the firmer training methods of the past. I focus on building the dog's confidence and making training enjoyable. However, I do feel that corrections are just as important as positive reinforcement. You wouldn't raise your child without telling him when something was unacceptable, and training a dog is no different. An appropriate balance between positive reinforcement and corrections is vital to communicating clearly with your dog.
Q: Where is your training school?
A: How to Be a Good Dog LLC. uses two training styles: Owner Absent & Home-based training. Both of these styles train in your home not at a training facility. Most behavior problems are going to occur in your home, and the dog feels more relaxed and less distracted in a familiar place. In the future How to Be a Good Dog LLC. hopes to incorporate some classroom style training in addition to these one-on-one styles.
Q: Within what region do you train?
A: Currently I train in the Chambersburg, Gettysburg, Greencastle, Waynesboro, St. Thomas, and Shippensburg areas. If you are unsure whether I will come to your house, simply contact me with your address and I will let you know!
Q: How do I know which style of training I should choose?
A: You don't have to be certain which type of program you want to partake in. After the initial interview I will suggest which type of program I think is most suitable to you and your dog's situation.
